The Association was born in 1934 thanks to a group of  bell ringers from Bologna urged by  Cav. Cesare Brighenti descendant from the famous Bolognese foundry and he himself a foundryman. The aim of the association is to keep alive and spread the Bolognese bell ringing art. The seat of the association was established at St. Francis‘ cloister in Bologna where it remained till the 1960s when it was moved to Casalecchio at first at St. Martin’s church and then at the residence of the present chairman, Mr Angiolino Roffi, where it is still at present.

Aims of the association, as from its charter, are to preserve and spread the tradition of the ringing of bells after the Bolognese fashion in religious and civil manifestation and cement the bonds of solidarity among all fans of  the bell ringing art, through synergy with other associations and  bell ringers of the area.

In fact, for the achievement of the social aim, the association activities unfold between complying  with religious services at churches in Bologna and province and participating in civil ceremonies or enterprises which might someway contribute to a larger spreading of the bell ringing art.

Have you ever wondered why they ring  the bells and  the way they do it in Bologna? In a few lines  we’ll try to give you a little smattering about that, hoping to stir curiosity in you and to drive you to climb a bell tower when you hear them ring. Then you’ll discover a wholly new world made up of people  who try to pass on a century-old art and who have taken spur from that to build and consolidate a bond of friendship. Actually around  the ringing of the bells we are trying to make  a lot of activities from competitions among ourselves to trips or even only ringings that we perform together to enjoy ourselves in addition to making practice, trying however not to forget that  the Bolognese bell ringing art was primarily born for a religious aim. Besides if your curiosity is not yet satisfied we’ll try to tell you something also on how bells are made: visit the pages about the foundries.

Bells are rung all over the world and perhaps you might have known this, but if you want to get an idea of  how many the bell ringers in Italy can be try to have a look at this list that  reports the addresses of the main associations and of some individuals that every year meet for the national convention and who have been  trying for some years to found a sort of central committee that could have the strength to promote and spread the bell ringing art. Abroad we can say that  England has a very strong organization led by the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers.
